Name-based vs. IP-based Hosting

All domains hosted on our system use a shared IP by default. You can always switch a domain to a dedicated IP from your end user control panel for that domain. However, keep in mind that there is a monthly charge for static IP's and there is no functional difference between name-based and IP-based hosting on our system. Static IP's are only required if you are using  one of the following features:

  • Domains with their own SSL certificates
  • Anonymous FTP
  • Virtual FTP Server (not standard FTP)

To switch a domain to a static IP, you can do the following:

1. Login to the end user control panel.

2. Click on the domain name. That will bring you to the "edit domain" page.

3. Click on "change to dedicated IP" in the third row of that page.

Note: whenever you switch from a shared IP to a dedicated IP you need to allow up to a few hours for propagation while the system updates to reflect the IP change. For this reason it's normally best to do this at night to avoid any disruption of business for the domain in question.
